In early 2015, JBM teamed up with SunEdison, at the time one of the largest renewable energy developers globally, to develop the five megawatt Beech Farm solar project near Swindon. This project now generates enough electricity to satisfy the equivalent consumption needs of more than 1,000 UK households. Rather than going through the normal planning process, JBM identified an opportunity to secure planning consent via Swindon Borough’s low-carbon Local Development Order (LDO).
The LDO allowed Swindon to identify and consent multiple solar projects across the borough in a single, streamlined process. Beech Farm was the first solar project to achieve full planning compliance under this LDO. As the development partner on this scheme, JBM identified the opportunity, secured land rights and a grid connection. The development team managed the project through the planning phase. Our development partner SunEdison constructed the site, which was operational before March 2016.
